The AMS-C 28 assesses intrinsic (internal) motivation towards knowledge, accomplishments, and stimulation. and extrinsic (external) motivation that consists of introjected and identified regulations, and amotivation (lack of motivation) (Vallerand et al., 1989). The self-determination theory and the constructs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness as they relate to intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation provides the analytical structure of many research studies. Most recently, self-determination theory has been used in research studies concerning education on the topics of blended learning (Chiu, 2021), student engagement (Masland, 2021), student adjustment in online courses (Audet et al., 2021), academic motivation across socioeconomic and immigrant backgrounds (Manganelli et al., 2021), autonomy supported teaching (Reeve & Cheon, 2021), and curriculum planning (Chu & Chai, 2020).
